Vivica Genaux

Vivica Genaux

Hailing from Fairbanks, Alaska, mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux is renowned for the musicality and dramatic intensity of her performances.
Since her professional debut as Isabella in Rossini's L’italiana in Algeri, she has thrilled audiences throughout the world with her singing of music of extraordinary difficulty.
Her repertoire encompassing more than sixty rôles, Vivica is a lauded interpreter of Baroque and bel canto opera and oratorio, as well as a champion of Lieder and

neglected music, particularly the works of Johann Adolf Hasse.

Vivica’s advocacy for Hasse’s music was honored by Johann Adolf Hasse-Stiftung with the 2019 Hasse Preis. She is also the recipient of the 2017 Händel Preis (Stiftung Händel-Haus), an ARIA Award, New York City Opera’s Christopher Keene Award, International Opera and International Classical Music Awards, and four GRAMMY® nominations.

Highlights of Vivica’s 2023 – 2024 Season include debuts as Stratonica in Alessandro Scarlatti’s Il Mitridate eupatore (Paris, Amsterdam), Galatea in Händel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo (Barcelona), and Melissa in Francesca Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola d’Alcina (Madrid); a performance of Hasse cantatas in Meiningen; and recitals with harpsichordist Jory Vinikour and pianist Marco Madrigal.

Earlier in 2023, Vivica reprised the rôles of Ino and Juno in Händel’s Semele and debuted as Dejanira in Hercules with Internationale Händel Festspiele Göttingen. She also added Cyrus in Händel’s Belshazzar to her repertoire at Theater an der Wien.

In 2022, Vivica sang the rôle of Dario—originally written for the legendary castrato Farinelli—in Quantum Theatre’s modern-premiere staging of Riccardo Broschi’s Idaspe (Pittsburgh).
